Why Wear in a Screw Pump Rarely Stays the Same | Shanghai Shangcheng Pump Valve

In many industrial applications, screw pumps are widely used for transporting high-viscosity liquids, sludge, oils, and various media containing solid particles. One characteristic often overlooked by operators is that once wear begins inside a screw pump, the deterioration process usually accelerates rather than stabilizes.

At first, the performance changes may seem minor. Flow rate remains close to normal, discharge pressure appears acceptable, and daily production is not noticeably affected. However, internal wear is often developing quietly.

The core pumping components of a screw pump are the rotor and stator. During operation, these two parts create sealed cavities that move the fluid continuously from inlet to outlet. As wear occurs, the sealing effect gradually weakens.

The first visible sign is usually a reduction in volumetric efficiency. Internal leakage increases, causing part of the pumped liquid to flow backward inside the pump. To maintain the required output, operators may increase speed or operating time, which unfortunately accelerates wear even further.

As the clearance between rotor and stator grows larger, several additional problems may appear:

• Reduced flow rate

• Lower discharge pressure

• Increased power consumption

• Higher operating temperature

• More vibration and noise

• Shorter service life of key components

In abrasive applications such as wastewater treatment, mining slurry transportation, chemical processing, and industrial sludge handling, the wear process can become particularly severe. Fine particles continuously erode the rotor surface and stator lining, making performance deterioration happen much faster.

Regular inspection is therefore essential. Monitoring pressure changes, flow fluctuations, power consumption, and vibration levels can help identify wear at an early stage before serious failures occur.

For industries requiring reliable screw pump solutions, selecting the proper pump model and maintaining critical wear components on schedule can significantly improve operating efficiency and reduce long-term maintenance costs.
